The Smell of School

Do you remember the smell of the green vinyl in the school bus? Ah, those were the days.

I used to take the bus to school before I turned 10 and we moved close enough for me to walk. After we moved, I didn’t miss the bus – it was filled with older kids that I didn’t know.

But I remember being driven to school in the morning car pool. We’d pass First Lake in town, and a cloudy mist would hang over it and the geese sleeping on the grounds.

In Early September, the air always smelled like “school time”. Even though I’ve been out of grade school for more years than I was in it, I still remember the smell of the air getting into the car on those school mornings. It has a very particular sense about it. It has only just started rolling in again. I don’t know what causes it.

These days, school is not something to dread- I kind of enjoy it. I take irregular classes at the local state college, choosing a class because it interests me, and not because I’m working toward a degree. While everyone stresses over how much they “don’t care if I fail because I’m just taking this class to fill credits”, I take it easy on one class at a time, and focus entirely on things that interest me. I’m lucky I get to choose.
