Topic :: Freedom of Information :: Web Censorship

So, do I think there should be censorship on the web? I think, after a fashion. There are certain subjects and websites which should be non-accessible to anyone who isn’t really looking for them. And some things are just damn wrong. (IE, Child pornography) I think there should be a way to put certain things behind a screen or a splash page – or something. Really, when I’m doing a search and I click to something, I do not generally wish to be assaulted by porn images. And yet, it never fails. I’ll do a search and click to a site and there are images fit for porn right there. What the hell.

So – really. I think, if you are going to house a porn site – make your meta tags a bit more specific so I don’t have to see that when I do a general search for other things. I don’t need to see that. I don’t want to see that. Thanks. q:

I also worry about kids finding stuff like that. Kids don’t necessarily know everything. I mean, here in the US, if you want to get to the website for the White House, you put in whitehouse.gov. Well, what if you didn’t know that? What if you thought, because it makes sense, it’d be whitehouse.com? Yeah, not a good place for kids to go. I had a teacher in college tell me her kid actually DID put whitehouse.com into the URL bar and hit enter. Oh, the horror. So, I suppose for things like that, you shouldn’t be able to register domains which would, logically, be used for official things, like the White House.

Honestly, I’m not saying we should be censored on what we put up, but I think there should be some ways to make it less likely for kids to find questionable material.

Oh, and let’s not get started on posting how to make bombs. What the fuck is wrong with you people. WHY would you WANT to post that? Given everything which has been happening around the world and in our schools? Stuff like that should definitely not be about for people to find. Guh. >___< Anyway. Thoughts?

  1. Eliza says:

I think that any proposal for regulating how information is accessed, and implementing a system where access to information can be restricted to minors is acceptable. But when people start talking “web censorship” that evokes a completely different image in my head. There is a very fine line between censorsing for the good of the people, and censoring for the good of the ruling elite. Granted, it does reek a bit of a paranoia, but it is how I feel when web and censorship are mentioned.

Obviously I’ve rambled on a bit about this topic on my site wink

  2. I just think people are stupid. I mean to do that sort of thing and “trick” people into visiting porno sites. I don’t think that porn should be “google-able.” I’m not saying that they shouldn’t be available, because you know, I’m not into telling people how to live their lives. But there should be some sort of way to get that mess out of the eye of the general public.
