Boys == Weak

And when I say boys, I mean, my brother.

The poor boy (and he’s 27 years old, mind you) called this morning. Apparently, he’d become really photosensitive. To the point that any light was utterly painful. (We lit six candles on a cake this evening and that was too bright. Srsly.) Well, Mom and I go to the ER with him. We wait. And wait. And wait. He comes out. Iritis. Apparently, some sort of inflammation of the iris. Something.

Anyway. He gets medicine. Two sets of eye drops and an ointment. (Yeah. Ointment for his eyes. Very strange.)

My brother doesn’t do stuff near his eyes.

So – we have to do it for him. Mom and I. Well, turns out – me.

Took about an hour to get this stuff in his eyes. Maybe two.

Every time we’d get near, he’d curl into a fetal position away from us. And then, we finally get one drop in – he’d freak out. Oy vey. Not to mention, we have to do it in the dark. Completely. Because otherwise he has to keep his eyes closed. Hard work, srsly. (I’m channeling KentuckyGurl here. My god.)

I love my brother and I know he’s freaking out and in pain – but – WOW. The writhing was making it more difficult. I finally had to tell him to breathe in whole notes instead of sixteenth notes. That seemed to actually help. We are a weird family. My father went – “huh?!” Poor dad. He’s the only non-musical one in the family.

But. Anyway. Boys == weak.

Rebuttals, my boy readers? (;

    I think it depends on what sort of pain it is when it comes to how guys handle it. If it’s an Ache or something is simply sore/strained guys will just soldier on through it and brag.

    But if it’s something they can’t just ignore through sheer willpower we turn into 3 year olds. Myself, I am a giant infant when it comes to ANY sort of Dental Pain.

    As for the ladies, they have a different tolerance for pain altogether. My wife is almost the exact opposite of me in that regard, sore muscles and other things that I consider “simple” pains are wait get her all cranky and whiny.

    I think it’s a fundamental difference in how we are wired smile

    Oh no, poor brother! I do hope that he recovers soon. Having impaired vision for a few days is hard. Oh and yes, I agree, boys are weak. Hahaha. Peace.

    Sounds like you and your mom baby him too much. I am not opposed to helping him. BUT! If he does not want to help himself by staying still, I would give him the medication and tell him to do it himself or suffer.

    *In my offended voice*

    “heeeeey! we’re not weak! you are weak!”

    Apologies for the infantile remark. I couldn’t resist. smile

    I used to be totally afraid of anything going near my eye. It took me a week to actually manage and put my first contacts on! I still can’t put drops in my eyes and if things get too close to my eyes I freak out.
