In as much as Easter is one of the overly commercialized “Holidays” to come around each year I appreciate the fact that the coming of the large rabbit and his chocolate eggs means my life gets thrown into chaos. I don’t know how many of you work/have worked in a Kitchen for a living but in most cases you develop a very specific skill set which compliments your co-workers much like a well oiled machine. Holidays in such an environment mean that parts of the machine sometimes go missing. This was one of those days for me.
Let us just say that I ran my a$$ off all day long today getting the Kitchen prepped for Holiday business (normal business being far more predictable, you have lunch, you have dinner etc etc) while the rest of the crew sort of puttered about and did their usual thing. Now, all that being said I rather enjoyed it because I was in sole charge of the entire Kitchen. Phenomenal Cosmic Powah!…itty bitty living space. But all that went to pot when the unthinkable happened…it was dead today, Tits Up as my father might say.
Nothing sucks as much as not having anything to do and knowing that if you don’t sell all this lovingly prepared food that the next day a goodly portion of that lovingly prepared food is “waste”. But there is nothing much I can do to control the fickle nature of the consuming public. Not that I haven’t tried of course. Also a side effect of it being quiet is the inevitable, Umm so what do we do now? question. Cleaning, and more cleaning, followed by cleaning and a chance of cleaning breaks in the afternoon. Augh! I’d rather be hectic busy than quiet any day of the week, at least the time goes quickly and you know you’re food is going out the way it should.
Humbug Easter Bunny! Humbug I say!

And to comment to your post: I say cook the food and give it away to the people working there. If anything is going to go to waste see if you can cook it and donate it to a shelter or something. Would your boss(es) let you do anything like that? The only good thing about the holidays (any overly commercialised holiday) is that people in need get some extra attention/help from the more fortunate.
Actually it’s a case of one bad apple at work for the whole “Cooking it off to feed staff” deal. A long time ago one of the Cooks was caught making extas of things JUST so he could claim them at the end of the day for free.
As for the Shelter idea we don’t currently have anything other than a Food Bank in this area so it wouldn’t help anyone to give it to them as they just store food til someone comes for it. If we had something like a Soup Kitchen etc I’m sure we’d be doing that.
Some people are too selfish. Oh well, it was an idea.
